Mortar Fever

Mortar fever seems to have gone PANDEMIC! Put that in your H1N1 pipe and smoke it! Local Wildlife guy Daniel dragged his brother Tyron Wolff in from Oz to take the Mortar Round challenge. Tyron isn't a small guy and was going to shoot for the record.

Corrections on the previous post as Dave reports from Some Platform in the Gulf of Mexico that He and Mike had done 8 rounds, but Paul Thomas was able to put down 9 before giving it up at the Porcelain Alter.

Stop the presses. Mike just walked into the bar and says Paul did 8 and was laid out on the floor and tried to have the waitress pour it down his throat while laying down.

Here is the OFFICIAL STANCE!!!! Since all the changes over the last year and this blog coming on line..... I hear by declare....You do 8 Mortar Round and you have matched the record and eventually we will be dedicating a wall of shame in the bar!

None the less Tyron gave it a good shot and picked up two T-shirts to take home! Job well done Tyron.

Daniel, Mike, and Tyron

Tyron after completing number 5. At ease soldier!

REMINDER!!!!

JP and the Nurses will be performing Saturday night July 25th. The fun starts at 9PM

Just reading some stuff on Thaivisa.com and man o man!!! It's no wonder tourism in Thailand is down. 150 baht atm fees, people getting scammed in the airport by KingPower Concessions to the tune of 7000 dollars, Shoot outs on Patong Beach in Phuket, Not to mention the HIGH PRICES for beer!

Come to Cambodia. Things are civilized here! Many carriers fly in direct and you can by pass Bangkok. Great sites, great people and great entertainment VALUE!!!

Warm friendly people here! Still genuine! And two tier pricing isn't out of control!

This is probably one of the best times to visit as tourism is down, Angkor Wat isn't as crowded as previous years and the roads in the country are better which will allow you to see more in less time!

Once you get in the country make sure you stop by Sharky. We are the only venue with 4 pool tables and Jantou below is stiff competion for you visiting Sharks.

Our pool girls, Sophea, Pisey, and Saran overseeing the tables nightly.

Once Jantou has ruined your attempt at taking the table, try some of the best food in town. Western favorites, The BEST Tex-Mex in South East Asia and a Thai menu that will keep any accompanying Tilac sabai sabai.

MMMMMM. Pork Tacos, Jalapeno Poppers, Nachos and Buffalo Wings. Well I can't stand it any longer, off to bother the cooks in the Kitchen!!!

Route 66 Rocks!

The rain couldn't put a damper on Route 66 rockin and rollin into a packed house both Friday and Saturday night. Jean Philippe from Thom Thom joined the band on both nights and even local singer Ian chimed in for a few tunes. They just keep getting tighter and the crowd knows it.

Get your kicks on Route 66 their trademark opener, was followed by some great blues, Crossroads by Cream, Honky Tonk Woman by the Stones, and Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix just to name a few.

Salt and Pepper and Red Hot just to spice up the crowd a little.

Always someone trying to be cute in the background!

Our friends the Germans enjoying some heavy metal during the intermissions and our Thai friends enjoying some German Scorpions on their "Holiday" from their busy work week.

Jean Philippe on Bass and Tommy on Drums. The Staff giving them a standing ovation and Ian joining the band.

Always a pleasure having them come to town.

Still a full summer calendar with JP and the Nurses on the 25th of July as well as the third week in August. We hope to get Route 66 back again early August.

Don't forget the BBQ on the first Sunday of Every Month! Al will be doing it this time.

If you haven't made travel plans yet, September is starting to shape up with a few fun filled events. Stay tuned for more updates.

Mortar Round Fever - July 11 at Sharky Bar

It seems like there is Mortar Round Fever at Sharky Bar. Last night the MR Challenge was met by our German friends here in Phnom Penh doing construction work at the German Embassy. These Heavy Metal Rockers were busy consuming lots of Schnappes and Draft Beers when Mike walked by them with a MR in hand. Ever inquisitive about the Bar, and never ones to turn down a Challenge, Uwe "enthusiastically" requested to take the MR Walk and his dream came true. ( Maybe it was a bad dream for him ?? )

Surrounded by a bevy of Sharky beauties cheering him on, Bartender Malein brings on #1 MR Round which goes down painlessly. However, upon examination by the MR Chief, Mike, it is discovered that he still had about a couple of ounces of fluid remaining. Because Uwe is a good sport, we let him continue to #2 after telling him to drink a bottle of mineral water for "flushing" purposes.

Egged on by his mate Thomas, # 2 MR appears. Uwe gets into the Challenge and promptly pastes a " # 2 " on the Mortar Round itself. Down the Hatch it goes, a little more slowly than # 1, as quipped by a few appreciative customers watching the action.

Malein and Waitress Sophoan bring out the "Mortar Round T-Shirt" to give Uwe more moral support ( or pressure ) and he examines it to his satisfaction. He asks for a few moments so he can pray, and it is granted by Mike.

As Uwe contemplates MR # 3 in front of him, locked and loaded, he decides to paste a # 3 on his nose "for posterity". Then he posts a # 130 on his head as well for wishful thinking ( and probable death ) !!

Now ready, Uwe goes for it and BINGO, it is all inside of him as the peanut gallery cheers him on. To the delight of all spectators, he turns over the MR to show it is all gone. He dons the legendary T-Shirt, and sits at the Bar with lots of people congratulating his feat. Asked if he wishes to continue, all Uwe can do is to move his head up and down which looks like a Yes, but Mike decides the German Curtain has come down on him and serves another bottle of water to our friend. Thomas is asked is he would like to continue the German push into Cambodia, but remarks "another day" which is then respected.

Congratulations to our latest MR Winner - Mr. Uwe !!!

Mortar Round Night

Well by some strange planet alignment, it turned out to be Mortar round night. Kevin and his friend Tessa visiting from Newport Beach, had been in the night before and were scoping out the particulars. Kevin was ready to take the Mortar round challenge.

One, two, three. Good job Kevin. Been there, Done that and now has the Mortar Round T-shirt.

Meanwhile at the other side of the bar, Poch one of our waitress is up for the challenge as well.

You go Poch. All 40 Kilos of you. Put them away! Not to be out done by Poch, Kevin ask about the record of 8 by Mike and Dave. He's gonna try!

He gets through number four, while Poch is feeling the effects. Knocks down number 5 in pure style.

Wait he's down,,,,no he's back up and after a plate of nachos he is ready for number six. Meanwhile number 3 has kicked in for Poch.

Tessa starts coaching. Smart Coach. She knows that he has an 11am flight to catch and its going to be a rough morning.

Kevin makes the right choice and holds at five...a remarkable accomplishment, and Poch hangs tough as well. Both are still standing and able to walk down the stairs. Mike congratulates Kevin on a job well done.

Art Opening

Throwing one of long time good customers a bone here. (Maui) Dave Richards had an opening last night displaying watercolor paintings at the Art Cafe on Street 108. Coming from an art background myself, I don't have the eclectic comments and other crap that Ärt Critics" speak of when they review shows, but I can say it was a great showing and a fun event. Nice variety of subjects done in the Dave Richards style and some fun pieces depicting some Phnom Penh life. See it for yourself.

The show will continue through the end of the month, but you can only view when the Art Cafe is open which is Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Dave has done quite a few pieces for locals around town, me included. You can also catch a big mural of his at Lone Star Saloon on Street 172. Most nights you can catch Dave at the 8 Ball table in Sharky!

Doc, a sophisticated art critic right, and Dave with friends below.

Fourth of July 2009

4th of July Phnom Penh Style.... First time in a while that the 4th fell on a Saturday. Sharky has always provided the only show in town on the actual 4th date, but this year the US Embassy which celebrates on the following weekend was going head to head with us and Lone Star put on an early feed as well.

Al took the Fat Boy crew over to the Embassy and in conjunction with Dan Meats put on a great BBQ. I only wish I had Hurley and the Cantina Crew next to us to swap food and Margaritas with!!!

Meanwhile back at Sharky, Mike, Ross and I (and the girls in the Kitchen) put together the annual 4th BBQ. Normally when Al puts on his Sunday BBQ you need to be here on time. Not this time... I got stuck at the grill as we sold plates up until 8PM. Good spread of Burgers, Sausages, Ribs, Dogs and BBQ chicken. The Curtis King Band got to load up on some good eats after a brief afternoon rehearsal. Curtis and Simon top left.

Curtis rolled in from a gig in Hanoi just in time. The Band was tight and had Curtis not made it, the show would have gone on. Real pros! As the EDC switched the grid around 11:45PM, we lost power. Well the drummer kept the beat going and horns blared and the power came back on and the band chimed in with out missing a beat. Awesome!

Ruat, Curtis and Saran displaying the Patriotic colors of the day.

In the mix were some original songs, Stones, CCR, and Led Zepplin covers. DJ Turbo from Love FM was also in the house.

Cameo apperances from Barrack Obama and Uncle Sam. Mr. Lee demonstrating the real laziness of a day off.

Ross, and Sophorn and Friends, while Sean works his magic with the Fat Boys Staff in hopes of getting a free sandwich at a later date.

The Band mixing it up. Christine belting out the Blues.

Tony and Alin waiting of a meal. The Drummers always in the background....well front and center here! Pauv taking a much needed break.

Sangkor below is just what Uncle Sam needs to bolster its recruiting! That beer wouldn't hurt either!

Great turnout and great to see faces in the crowd that we haven't seen in a while. Thanks to all for coming.

July is still action packed. Route 66 returns on the 17th and 18th and on the 25th Dr. JP and the Nurses will be on stage. And more summer fun in August as well.

Dave, Dad and all you others in the west....see what your missing!
